We have no desire that the measures of the Government should not be subjected to the fullest examination and discussion, nor do we for a moment underrate the importance and usefulness of an Opposition which discharges its functions fairly and within parliamentary and constitutional limits but we hold that the reputation of our public men is the property of the country, which has a right to complain when attempts are made to tarnish this without any proper cause or foundation for the slander. We are glad that those attempts have signally failed as they do served, and that you still command the willing and loyal support of a large majority of the people's representatives in the House of Commons and of the eople themselves, and that the country still maintains a steady confidence in yourself and your Administration, an will long hesitate before returning to the former improvident regime....
