Sir Israel attempts to make the case that Shakespeare knew Hebrew and was far more knowledgeable and insightful about Judaism than he could have been. This is done through a study of THE MERCHANT OF VENICE. Gollancz reads a great deal between the lines. He comes across as a rather sweet and kind man, so one does not want to be unkind in this review, but these lectures tell us far more about Sir Israel than they do about Shakespeare.
