Man, is this preachy. Fire and brimstone levels of preachy.
This novelette is dedicated to the late Dallas Mayr (a.k.a. Jack Ketchum), and it does his memory proud! This story is stripped down to its essentials, emotionally resonant, and propulsive. Most of all, it's timely and deeply resonant--like the echo of a gunshot. Bailey's influences are showing, and he's living up to them. This one is a must read!
In this novella, we are dropped into the middle of a mass shooting/hostage type of event at a high school. This is a brilliant commentary on today’s very real and very terrifying issue of mass violence at schools. Much also must be said about the stunning cover artwork and gorgeous, highly graphically-minded interior. It’s almost like an illuminate...
Poorly structured, with an unrealistic and incomplete picture of a lockdown and school shooting incident that is not what it seems. I have kids in a school that is similar in size, and not only is the portrayal of the teenagers in the story inaccurate and contrived, but it is logistically impossible to see how the shooting could have occurred in the way that it is written. Why why whyThe book was so good and I was wanting more but then it just stops. Why??? That's the only two have it a 3 because it literally dead ended in the beginning of the book. Really disappointed but at the same time overly anxious for more.
To live by the swordA well thought out topical omelette. A high school goes into lockdown when gunfire is heard. It soon becomes clear there is more than one armed person. The narrative is well paced an the change of perspective with each chapter plays out well.
Well written but far too preachy and heavy handed.
