I But it is not alone in the narrow field of politics - that is in the election of officials and representatives - that the' need of equipped citizens is imperative. We are be ginning to realize today that there are eco nomic, social, and intellectual implications of citizenship as well. As a matter of government is so intimately connected and concerned with the business of a country, with the social problems of the people, that no one really can understand politics who has not also a background of knowledge concern ing at least the fundamentals of the economic and social life of the time, especially in his own country and particular community. Mr. Root strongly emphasizes this in his Yale.
