A few words may be expected by way of preface to this compilation of some of my personal experiences. The reader may wonder why I have not given the names of many persons who are mentioned in the pages of this book. If I were to give advice to any young man who wishes to become popular, it would be to keep a record of the names and addresses of every one he meets. This would entail a great deal of effort and would be difficult to do without appearing to the per son whom one meets as eccentric. It should be done with apparent casualness, yet done for future use. In cidentally, I did not have that faculty and I regret the lack of it, but I trust that the people whose names I have forgotten will not take offense, and that those who read my statements will believe them to be authentic.
