Jeder Affekt hat das Bestreben, sich zu erhalten; er bahnt die ihm entsprechenden Vorstellungen, verleiht ihnen ein übertriebenes logisches Gewicht, und er hemmt die widersprechenden und setzt sie in ihrer Bedeutung herab. So kann der Fröhliche viel leichter fröhliche Ideen assimilieren als traurige, und umgekehrt.
