I liked this, but did not love it. There's so much happening ALL OVER THE PLACE and it felt as if the comic was as coordinated as the dodgeball team. You can follow along with the underdog trope well enough. But I found the inconsistency of our protagonist (I'm over my head, oh I'm figuring things out, OVER MY HEAD AGAIN, and now I'm sorting this bit out) to be more distracting than endearing. There's twists I found intriguing. And with what we've seen so far, a lot of the characters are slightl...
4.5/5 StarsWHAT A TREASURE! A Latinx main character. Side characters of color! Cosplayers! Queer girls! A fat, Deaf character! Panels and panels of untranslated Spanish which sent my heart soaring! Sports! I'm ALL IN.
Eh, this wasn't really working for me. I appreciated the action-packed beginning, but it also introduced too many characters too fast, and like, was I supposed to remember all those names? And the plot just didn't really grab me so far.
Got this issue from a Humble Bundle. It was pretty neat.
5.8/10Seems like something I could like on the long run. I can't really judge after only one issue.
Despite not being a fan of dodgeball, I could see this being fun once we get to know the main cast a bit better. And I kinda wish there were translations for the Spanish conversations in the margins.. Will continue!
I’m not entirely sure how to feel about the comic just based off of this issue, but I like all of the diversity I’ve seen.
I can't remember why I thought I would enjoy this. I truly do not like or care about sports at all. I can't in good conscience give this a star rating because it is so clearly not made for me. I like the art style!
I picked this up at a local comic book store in a graphic novel display they’d briefly set up by the register. I figured I’d try something new. Thankfully, it was on clearance for just a couple bucks, and frankly, I can kinda see why.I’m not 100% sure what I just read. I mean, I know it’s a graphic novel about a school dodgeball team. At least I think it’s for a school. The entire story takes place in a gymnasium that looks like one you’d see in a school. Then again, I once belonged to a church
A really fun read with great fluid art (the line work McGee has is just lovely and always has been and though I'm not familiar with Peer's work their colors really pop!) It's a cute story (this is my first time reading work from Trujillo, but I could tell he knew what he's doing and that it was worth it by issue 2!) I'm already wanting to get invested in these characters dynamics and world. They take dodge ball very seriously which is sort of comical to me, but also endearing in an odd way. Ther...
to be honest i am surprised by the positive spin the creators placed on this childhood game. im under the impression that dodgeball is hell for most middle schoolers and even high schoolers. we werent allowed to play it in our hs bc the tension and compeitions would get out of hand w future minor league athletes hurtling balls at dangerous speeds. i enjoyed how open, fun and spontaneous this short first issue was. i want to be a fan but i need to see how the series goes.
3.25 stars. The art is delightful but the story is too light for me at the moment (and also, I have also been terribly spoiled by Haikyu! so I feel like I don't need more sports comics in my life).
