Living Racism: Through the Barrel of the Book

Living Racism: Through the Barrel of the Book

Willie Jamaal Wright
0/5 ( ratings)
This book is written at the same time when white, arms-bearing nationalists, Ku Klux Klan members and neo-Nazis are creating havoc on the streets of Charlottesville, Virginia with one person dead and several injured. Both the deceased and her young killer are far removed from the eras of slavery and Jim Crow; nevertheless, the racial thinking of those times is what brought them together. The idea of a post-racial America, fueled by a two-term Black President in Barrack Obama, seems far removed under the Trump administration. What is the America that we know? This book is based on the premise that race and racism are well-entrenched elements of U.S. society. Throughout the pages of this book, we have argued that race and racism are more than a mere concept; instead, we see and treat these as part of the fabric that constitutes and organizes our lives. Consequently, race and racism are maintained through structures such as social institutions and are carried by individual actors through racial ideologies and a racial etiquette that inform how we relate to and interact with one another . As we have expressed throughout this book, the notion of living racism is twofold. On the one hand, living racism denotes the ways in which racism is embodied and active, much like a living organism. On the other hand, living racism connects with the ways that we must navigate racism in our individual and collective lives. Collectively, the chapters offer structural and ideological arguments on change and continuity of racial domination of white supremacy and black oppression and resistance. The knowledge, evidence, perspectives, and discussions shared in this book suggest that this work is not only important, but also timely. It is something that all Americans should read if we are to move forward as a nation. It tells the racial history of the America we know.
