Broken Chords is a novel about an African American-Anglo Saxon young woman, Kara, who was forced to pass as white by her mother who hates her. At 18, Kara's sadistic step-father beats her and throws her out of the house. She becomes a highly successful designer in Atlanta despite all the odds.
The novel is set in North Carolina, North Georgia, Atlanta and a Texas ranch. Kara struggles to find her identity and love in the 1980's. Following a brief romance with her cousins fiance, Jon, she has an impulsive abortion which she deeply regrets.
Then the love of her life, Kip, a fabulously romantic entrepreneur, courts her. He knows the truth about her ancestry but it doesn't matter to him. He loves Kara deeply, and flies her in his personal jet to his North Carolina home and to his huge Texas ranch. He wants to marry Kara, and to help her accept the person she's become. But, can he help her put to rest the nightmares of her tragic childhood?
