3🌟I always look forward to a dual narrative from Katherine Webb as I love the books I have read by her. Sad to say I was slightly disappointed by The Disappearance. The writing was fab, as usual, but there was just too much of the same thing regarding Davey and Wyn. Two searches felt a bit over-egged The mystery surrounding Wyn was intriguing but I must be a cold hearted biatch as I found Frances' search for Davey a tad repetitive and boring.A 3🌟 read which I am surprised by as A Half Forgotten
A Great story that draws you in with fab characters,a book i can highly recommend to any reader and well worth the 5*well done to Katherine Webb.5*
Good suspense-historical fiction. I learned a lot about the bombing of Bath during WWII, and enjoyed the solid characters and story.
With the dual time line this book was a little drawn out for me and also very repetitive in the search for Davy. The Bath Blitz was not something I had heard about and it is always good to extend one's knowledge of history. The characters were well fleshed out and believable. Some parts of the story weren't so believable.Nothing changes, child abuse, sexual abuse, violence in families, making people scapegoats to satisfy the general populace still goes on. Politicians, police always say, we will l...
Visit the locations in the bookI do love a Katherine Webb novel. They've been set in rural houses, secrets in the mist and historically intriguing and this latest one is no different. Inspired by the Bath Blitz, it's more of a war story this time and there's less intrigue and stunning settings in the countryside, but it's typical Webb with its full formed characters and wonderful writing. The novel is set firmly in the war-torn city where bombs are raining down on the streets and houses in and ar...
I've read and loved all of Katherine Webb's books. This one is definitely my least favourite. The characters were fine, but no one really held my attention. I found the story a little dragged out and the plot was not as exciting as I expected from the book's blurb. I gave this 3 stars instead of 2 because of the heart wrenching "what if", that all Webb books are characterised by.Excellent narration. I think I would have like this story a lot less if I had have read it, rather than listened to it...
1942 and the city of Bath is under attack, a young boy called Davy is missing after a bombing raid. Frances, whose watch he was under, is plagued with guilt, desperate to find him amidst the wreck of the city. However, when the body of another missing child is found, she is thrown back into the past. 1918 and young Frances and Wyn were inseparable, that is until the day that Wyn disappeared. Now after all these years, can Frances finally piece together the truth of what happened to her best frie...
Really loved this book. Particularly interesting to read as I'm from Bath so am aware of the history of the area it is set in and the Bath Blitz. The author has obviously taken time to do her research and it really helps to paint a picture of life in this area at the time.
1918, Francis and Wyn are 8 years old and best friends. Whilst out playing they stumble across a frightened man hiding in an old building. The two girls befriend the man and promise not to tell anybody about him. Then something tragic happens, Wyn disappears. 1942 and bombs are been dropped and a body is disturbed from its hiding place.I have read several books by Katherine Webb and have enjoyed them. This one is no exception. For me they are stories to get involved in, with secrets to unfold.Th...
Set on dual timelines the main story takes place in 1942 during the war whilst the other is set in 1918 and follows the lives of two 8 year old best friends, Frances and Wyn.1918 – Frances and Wyn are inseparable, they do everything together. Whilst out playing the girls hear of an old haunted house that used to house the city’s lepers, and as every young child would, they decide to go and investigate. But it wasn’t ghosts they found, the ghost turned out to be a frightened young foreign man, Jo...
A beautiful, haunting tale of tragedy and loss set in wartime Bath, The Disappearance cements Katherine Webb as one of our finest contemporary authors. Memorable, credible characters - Frances is one of my favourite recent literary creations, fragile yet determined, broken yet strong - and atmospheric, evocative writing elevate this story of uncovered secrets and lost children. The urgency of the passing days following the Bath Blitz of 1942, as Frances frantically searches for the missing Davy,...
Overall a good story about guilt, friendship, love and uncovering the truth. A descriptive plot and well-researched in terms of the Bath blitz. The story was easy to follow between the two timeframes of 1918 and 1942. A real mix of characters feature in the story and each one is well-written.My only criticism of this book is the slow pace. There were several occasions where the story seemed a little repetitive and I felt like it was dragging on somewhat. For this reason, it was not a book that h...
I can’t really decided between 3 and 4 stars. This book was too slow to start. Yes, there was a bombing, a child lost, and a skeleton found within the first couple chapters, but it didn’t really feel exciting or like I wanted to keep reading. It only picked up about halfway through when Frances started to remember things. The 1918 chapters were more mysterious and vital to the plot, but there were too few of them. I liked a lot about the ending though and it really kept me guessing. I do always
I really enjoyed this book. Two parallel storylines - the disappearance of Wen at 8 years old in the closing months of WWI and the disappearance of her similar-looking nephew Davy during a bombing raid on Bath in WWII, Family secrets, a family friend who is still involved in the family's lives all these decades later. It kept me guessing until the end, although once everything was revealed it all made perfect sense. Definitely recommended. I will be looking out for more by Katherine Webb.
This is the second book of Katherine Webb's that I've read - actually listened to, and I quite enjoyed it. There were some stark similarities to The Legacy, that critically speaking are kind of annoying - specifically both protagonists searching through hidden memories due to trauma, but I find she writes those moments so well that I actually don't care as a reader. If you write something well, do it often. I'll definitely be pursuing her other books.
A very enjoyable read set in WW2 it goes between 1918 at the end of WW1 and WW2 and centres around the disappearance of an 8 year old girl. The missing girls best friend is the main protagonist and the story is about the aftermath of the bombings in Bath and the discovery of the missing girls remains. Perfect for fans of Rachel Hore and Judith Lennox.
