As as good as I would've likedI'm giving this book a point of two for just existing. It's a slim affordable read that doesn't have as much insight as I would have liked. I kept thinking that Mr. Smith could have gathered just as much material on the other two members of King's X and make a much satisfying book. As it stands, it's a decent little tome that's really just for the fans.
Dreadful
From the moment I heard the song “Over My Head” in 1989, I knew Doug (dUg) Pinnick was a force of nature. He has continued to both inspire me and bowl me over since then. What You Make It : The Authorized Biography of Doug Pinnick by Chris Smith immediately caught my attention. The book begins with his childhood in Illinois living with his great-grandmother. It follows Doug through childhood and adolescence in the 1950s and 1960s. The family and social dynamic was confusing in some ways, but nurtu...
Love King's X music and wanted to learn more about lead singer and bass player, Doug. In a world where too many things are based on a dollar value, it was refreshing to read about this band's incredible loyalty to one another.
Really quick and interesting read
I bought this book because I have been a fan of Doug Pinnick for nearly 30 years. I decided to go into this reading for facts and history of one of the most respected, yet underappreciated rock musicians in the business. There are a lot of interesting tidbits throughout the book. That said, the book could have benefited greatly by having an editor and a proofreader. If you can overlook multiple typos, a sometimes clunky narrative, and large omissions that King's X fans would question, then read
As a King’s X fan I love it. Finding out more about dUg’s life growing up and his inspirations was very nice. If you are a fan of him and all the musical endeavors you will enjoy it.
I loved the in-depth intimate look into one of my favorite musicians and I would give this book 5 stars but sadly the author and editor failed Doug. Not only is the book not written well and lacks cohesion at times, but so many typos, misspelled words and poor grammar made it hard to give it a higher rating. Love you dUg!
Pretty much what others have said: glad it exists, wish it were written better.
Good, as far as “musician biographies” go. Writing style is nothing exceptional but nonetheless well worth picking up by any King’s X fan who has followed them from the beginning, given the breadth of insight it provides not only into Doug’s life but his thought process lyrically/compositionally and the history of some favorite albums. Every now and then you’ll read about a particular biographical event and recognize the lyrical allusion. — Curious how dissatisfied Doug seems to be (retrospectiv...
I'll go 3 1/2 stars. This wasn't earth-shattering. At times I didn't think it was very well written. (No, I couldn't have done any better, so I shouldn't get so down on it.) It's not for the casual fan. With that said though, and as a fan of King's X and Pinnick's work outside the band, I really enjoyed it and read through it very quickly. It was insightful to learn some of the behind-the-scene things that happened, some of the friendships he has with other in the industry. I would love to read a...
I want to give this a better rating, as I've been a huge King's X fan since Gretchen was released, but the writing is not great. It was neat to learn about Doug's upbringing and the history of King's X though. For hardcore fans only (if you're reading this, that's probably you).
Must Read for King's X FansI learned an amazing about of information about dUg and the whole band from this book. A must read for any fan of the band.
