Our Town: Short Stories, Poetry and Art from Weston-super-Mare.

Our Town: Short Stories, Poetry and Art from Weston-super-Mare.

Howard Evans
0/5 ( ratings)
A collection of short stories, poetry and art produced by the students of Priory Community School Academy with a foreword by bestselling Author Jeffrey Archer.
Weston-super-Mare has had more than its fair share of challenges. The perception of many is that Weston is a beleaguered seaside town with closing shops, poor infrastructure and an outdated vibe.
But there is beauty here. There is real history here.
The ancient Egyptians sailed here to trade.
The Romans occupied the area and built defenses on every hilltop.
The Vikings were based on a nearby island and landed at Weston to raid and pillage the area.
The Victorians made our town a place of architectural beauty with a crescent of houses to rival Bath.
We have been home to great performers and writers. John Cleese, Roald Dahl and Jeffrey Archer all grew up here as did BBC newsreader and journalist Jill Dando.
We have been part of great scientific advancements. They tested the bouncing bomb here. Marconi made one of his first transmissions from the beach.
They have been making movies here for years. Emma Thompson, Anthony Hopkins, Cate Blanchett, Carey Mulligan, Keira Knightly and Andrew Garfield have all filmed here.
For a brief moment, we became the artistic and celebrity centre of the world when Banksy’s Dismaland opened.
And these are just the facts! Legend gives us an even richer history. Legend has it that Joseph of Arimathea arrived here to take the Holy Grail to Glastonbury. Legend has it that the residents of our town gave the Vikings a bloody nose and drove them from the southwest. Legend has it that the church on nearby Uphill protects us all from a doorway to the underworld. Legend has it that Weston was a centre for occult practices in Victorian times. Legend has it that the area has been home to secret weapons tests during the last war. Legends that deserve their own book one day.
To appreciate our town, all you need to do is stand on the seafront.
Look south. The beach stretches for miles. Uphill hill with its church and tower. Landing point of ancient Egyptians. The hills of Exmoor in the distance.
Look east and you will see a town that took significant bombing during the Second World War and has found the 21st century a challenge. It has become the victim of poor planning and shop closures but look closer. The Odeon cinema and The Winter Gardens pavilion are pieces of art-deco art. The Cherry Blossoms along The Boulevard are like a quarter mile of confetti.
Look north. Beautiful Victorian architecture on the hillside. Worlebury hill and woods above with its Roman encampment. The eerie iron skeleton of Birnbeck Pier on the brink of collapse into the sea.
Look west. The Brean Down peninsula reaches out to the sea. The Somerset coastline stretches all the way to Ilfracombe on a clear day. You can even see the steam from the Somerset railway locomotive some 15 miles away as it charges down the coast. The strange islands of Steep Holm and Flat Holm rise from the sea. Both camps for Viking marauders many years ago. Across the channel, Cardiff gleams in the distance like a city from the future. Beyond all of this is the horizon and nothing in your way until America. I challenge anyone to find a more beautiful sunset.
Yes, we have problems here. Yes, we are a work in progress. But this is our town. A town that we can be proud of. A town with a rich past and great potential for the future. If the writers, poets, photographers and artists showcased in this little eBook are anything to go by…it will be a bright future.
Please remember that many of our contributors are not even in their teens. The pictures their words have painted are so evocative. Their poetry is so carefully crafted. Their photography is refreshing and new.
