A matter of Trust

A matter of Trust

Nicholas Udall
0/5 ( ratings)
Kate is a young working-class widow. Proud and independent, she is bringing up her young daughter Rosie in the unforgiving world of early 1960s Manchester. Grieving over the loss of her husband Joe, Kate is devastated to discover that before his murder, he had been cheating on her. Whilst Kate works in the heady atmosphere of one of Manchester's earliest betting shops, Rosie is cared for by May, her Nanny. May hopes that Kate can find happiness again. Yet for Kate, it is a matter of trust. After Joe, can she ever rely on any man again? Meeting Ed, a young graduate, Kate is struck by his quiet and unassuming nature, so different to Joe. Ed is taken by Kate's beauty, her kindness and understanding. It isn't long before he has fallen in love with her. After Ed has met Rosie, the couple go out together, the night ending as Kate, in control, makes love to her inexperienced suitor. Deeply affected by the feelings he has awakened, Kate defies convention and allows Ed to move in with her and Rosie. With a strong social conscience, Kate detests the abuse suffered by so many of her contemporaries. Acknowledging the low expectations that society has imposed on women, she feels a burning desire for change. Kate recognises though that notions of equality and liberation have yet to reach the working-class areas of Manchester. Strong and determined, Kate is unprepared to allow any man to dominate her. With Ed, she believes that she has the perfect partner. He loves her unconditionally and becomes a true father to her child. Prepared to put her trust in him, the two get married. Yet their union is soon to be rocked by tragedy and their marriage severely tested. Will the trust that has developed between them prove to be enough to maintain and strengthen their relationship?
