The Clay Orchard

The Clay Orchard

Robert Wright
5/5 ( ratings)
Tom Cutter is a hearing-impaired, middle-aged sculptor who ekes a nominal living in New York City’s art world. He is unexpectedly awarded the commission of his lifetime — a one man exhibition at an internationally-respected museum in Cleveland. Cutter contacts Tanzia, his ex-lover and favorite model, to pose for his project. While they work together, flashbacks detailing Cutter's experiences at a boarding school near Cleveland emerge in his thoughts. The social trauma of being deaf in an all-boys' prep school, the awakenings of his artistic abilities and his first love experiences combine to jump-start his engine. The past and present narratives diverge as he works on his commission. While his relationship to Tanzia changes and the reality of his nascent public life evolves, his past becomes more relevant to what he creates. The novel culminates with the opening of the Cleveland exhibition and a twist/revelation of the sculpture's significance to Tom's experiences.
