gave it a shot cause i like witches and lesbians so why not.it.... doesn't have me. i liked the first half! but i sure didn't like the creepy stepford wives type stuff we seem to be kicking off the current events of the story with.shame cause i love all the artists involved
Hex Wives is a brand new series in the DC universe. It’s interesting in that it doesn’t really fit in with any of the other series – yet. It has a darker tone to it, which is understandable. The series focuses on three women, three witches, if you want to get technical. They keep reincarnating, and thus are pretty impossible to stop in the long term. The three women remind me a lot of Hocus Pocus and the Sanderson Sisters, and that may or may not have been intentional (it’s possible that both a
Intriguing I’m familiar with Ben Blacker from The Thrilling Adventure Hour. This was my first comic, but I’m intrigued. I’m already angry on behalf of these women and may buy hard copies to savor the experience..
Yeah. This is a good start. That art by Andolfo is just amazing.
Finishing out the year on a question mark with this one. I am not sure yet how I feel about this series or if I like it yet. . .
A little Hocus Pocus, a little Stepford wives. A good start for world building and character introduction. Plus gorgeous art and great use of color.
I wanted to like this more than I did. This series sells itself as "Witches vs the Patriarchy" but so far it's "Non-sensical Stepford Wives ripoff" with a bit of American Horror Story: Coven thrown in. And not the good parts.Maybe it gets better later, but I'm through 6 now and it's a slow start that doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Hoping #7 has actual badass witchery in it or I'm probably done.If you're gonna sell something on a super feminist hook, maybe don't have it be an outdated, ham-fi...
This is one of those "I really wanted to like it" sort of comics – but there's just something about the pacing of the narrative that threw me for a loop! I didn't enjoy myself reading this, and maybe it gets better in later issues but it just doesn't seem worth it to give this comic more of my attention than it already received.
If you like implied rape this might be the story for you, if your into the extremely niche stepford fetish you might also enjoy this, if your into other niche fetishes this might be for you but otherwise stay the hell away. This is a book that's concept can't be done by a male writer it really seems. Like and from interviews and solicits honestly it just seems like it gets worse. I would stay so far away from this book. There was nothing that made me feel more bad that I can remember including s...
Despite the early violence, this was a bit dull. The setup and concept has promise, but the execution, a tame 1950s-style housewife drama, fails to be gripping enough to keep me reading.
This was interesting. I like the plot and the art! Can't wait to read more!
Really good start, looking forward to more!
31 pages my butt. This is the first single issue I've picked up from a non-independent publisher and there so much wasted pages here. It's just filled with promotionals of other stories. Also edit because damnit! I said I was going to start doing something this year and already forgot. Diversity here! F/F romance/sexy times!Blech! That said, I love the dark elements of this and really dug what I got so far. I'm definitely interested in seeing where these witchy ladies go from here and hope there's...
This is promising. I liked the stories from the past way better than the present time ones. I hope they continue to go back and forth and not just focus on the present. But then if the present alters a bit that might work too. Looking forward to this one.
I'm gonna hold off on forming an opinion on this one until I've read more, because I'm really on the fence, both conceptually in in execution.Potential to be interesting, potential to be a real trainwreck.
Thanks, I hate it.Sounded like a cool premise but I despise the way witches are portrayed. I'm a witch, witches exist, and we don't commune with Satan and cause chaos. (Ok... not all of us)There's also some wlw content, but I just.... this all felt so ham-fisted. Ra ra feminism, 50s aesthetic... it's not vibing with me.(Maybe because Joëlle Jones did it so much better?)
I read this issue and was initially intrigued by the setup in this particular installment, but after watching Ashley at Bookish Realm's review on the volume and how the writer tokenized the only black woman/character in the series, I think I'm gonna have to pass. I was worried that would be the case and it seems like my suspicions were confirmed. I'm gonna search for more witchy themes written by women of color because I'd like to see a similar concept written by someone who knows what they're t...
Efficient world building and character introduction, deeply unsettling scenario, gorgeous art and great use of colour throughout. I loved it!
Three women, witches, are hunted by this family throughout the years (and men in general). Now they’re housewives who haven’t “awoken” essentially to their true identities. There’s definitely violence and gore here which I thought was an interesting juxtaposition to the latter half of the issue in brightly illustrated suburbia. I’m invested and interested to see where this goes.
An interesting premise that was atrociously executed. Characters and storyline are poorly developed and I couldn't tell if it was the 1950s or the present until someone said something about online shopping. It made little sense why supposedly intelligent and powerful women would act unquestioningly about how long they had lived somewhere, where their families were, when they last left their neighborhood, who they were, etc. etc. etc., no matter the time period. BLAH. Waste of life.
