He has delivered the Robert Fortenbaugh Memorial Lectures at Gettysburg College and the Walter Lynwood Fleming Memorial Lectures at Louisiana State University and has received a Guggenheim Fellowship and the Francis Parkman Prize for Literary Distinction in the Writing of History.
