Six years after the settlement of the city of Boston, an appropriation of was made as part of a fund for the establishment of a college. It was a small but consecrated corner-stone. Around and over it, as the years have passed, have been reared the walls of a noble and lofty institution and the influences of Harvard Col lege have permeated the nation, and her illustrious children have poured light upon the world. The common school system of this country is of New England origin and of those sturdy Pilgrim Fathers, Froude might have said, as he said of the Scotch With them education was a passion.
