A sermon preached in the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church, New York on May 7, 1916
What did the apostle conceive to be his mission along this road? It was a mission which overwhelming antagonisms were unable to turn aside. And this is how he describes it: “To testify the gospel of the grace of God.” This man with his Damascus secret of a personal spiritual revolution, and with his priceless treasures of personal experimental fellowship with the Lord, and with a sense of indebtedness which no amount of service could ever discharge, faced all the needs and hostilities of the world with the gospel of redeeming grace. He went to Ephesus, that home of mixed superstitions, with the gospel of the grace of God; and he went to Corinth, that center of polished materialism, with the gospel of the grace of God; and he went to Rome, that seat of hard imperialism, with the gospel of the grace of God. Everywhere he went, traversing mountain roads and trudging sultry plains, and crossing wide seas, carrying the tidings of redeeming grace.
