Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Rotorua is New Zealand’s only hospital specialising in rheumatic and arthritic complaints and in rehabilitation from other conditions. Originally the wartime Services Convalescent Hospital for wounded soldiers, and later a facility for children with cerebral palsy, it has become a much-loved institution. Its gentle, holistic approach to both the bodies and minds of its patients, and its use of natural thermal waters has improved the quality of life for thousands of sufferers over 70 years. After many years within the public health system, in 1993 it became a private hospital run by a community trust. This history is a fascinating study of a unique hospital and its place within New Zealand’s health politics.
