A solid set of short stories, well worth the time to read.
Tor.com is publishing some of the best genre short stories out there right now, and try as I might, I can't up with the releases on their website. Therefore, I was thrilled this year when they introduced a new mailing list that allowed subscribers to get their short works in a collection in various ebook formats. This book was everything I hoped it would be. Going into it, I was most excited about the prospect of reading "Articulated Restraint" by Mary Robinette Kowal, as I recently read her two
Liked 4 of the stories, thought one was ok, and really didn't like one of them.
My average star rating for this collection is 3.25 stars. Out of 6 stories, three were pretty good, one was just good and two were stinkers. All six were published by Tor and were included in a new bi-monthly newsletter showcasing new science fiction and fantasy short stories. I was really happy to receive this free newsletter and can't wait for more. Here are the stories and my ratings:Beyond the El - 3 stars - Not sure if it was magic or science, but it was interesting!Deriving Life - 2 stars
A great set of short stories from Tor. Would recommend!
As with so many other story collections, I found a mixed bag of intriguing ideas, interesting characters, inventive worlds, and not nearly enough time with any of them. Some stories were well constructed and others made me look up the author for more to read, but mostly I just felt unsatisfied.
"Beyond the El" by John Chu 4 starsA man grieves for his mother by trying to recreate her cooking, only to find that he must cope with a toxic sibling in order to move forward. The emotional honesty of the story perfectly balances the magical element."Deriving Life" by Elizabeth Bear 5 stars"Childhood is a miserable state of affairs, and I wouldn’t wish it on anybody I loved."When a parent rejects you, finds you so unlovable that they terrorize and hurt you, it leaves you with a great sense of
Some of the stories were alright, but I doubt I’ll remember most of them by the time the next collection is released.
The stories in this selection are all quite decent, for my taste a bit on the average side. The one that was outstanding, was"Deriving Life" by Elizabeth Bear. A mindbending take on a cancer death makes this one unique, depressing and deep. A bold story that hit me hard.
