***full review to come***A Distasteful Horror Story is an unusual and audacious debut novel, combining Mains’ love of genre with a rollicking, twisty narrative. It also concludes with a payoff that will, I’m sure, be hotly debated for some time to come. I found it to be a disturbing joy to read.
I've just finished reading this book. I own the limited signed hardback copy #40 which I'd been meaning to read for a while now.Overall this book is a deep dive into the horror community and the life of a horror writer as they climb the ladder of success within the genre. Often funny with some horrific scenes scattered throughout this was a thoroughly enjoyable read but not without its problems.I get that names have to be changed due to some of the activities of characters within this book but t...
A DISTASTEFUL HORROR STORY by Johnny MainsReview by Trevor Kennedy for Phantasmagoria Magazine. The narrator of this very darkly humorous novel is a horror fanboy - a huge fanboy, in fact. Especially for the British literary scene, excitedly attending as many of the conventions as possible with an enthusiastic glee. He’s been an obsessive collector of horror-related books, film props and other memorabilia all his life, growing up in the 1980s binging on Video Nasties and other related pastimes. A...
A Distasteful Horror Story is an unadulterated foray into unbridled smut, a filthy and hellish confession from a smirking imp of a man that has slipped over the edge of caring. A mischievous poke at the horror genre, and an absolute delight. If there are any copies left then grab one quickly!
Everything I say about this book is true even with – or especially because of – all of this book’s raw edges of style and crepitating stupor. The detailed review of this book posted elsewhere under my name is too long or impractical to post here.Above is one of my observations at the time of the review.
A big thanks to the author, Johnny Mains, for sending me a copy of this book (I won a copy on his Twitter page). I never win anything, so it was a big deal to me. I was pulled into the story almost immediately. I loved that many of the authors mentioned in this book are real, which forced me to google all of them and see what they had written. The story made me wish I had saved more of my horror memorabilia from my childhood. Also, there is definitely some distasteful content, but I wouldn’t hav...
I was asked to proofread this book before publication - not always, by any means, an enjoyable task. But I must admit having enjoyed doing it this time. This is a unique horror novel, with deep insights into the horror comunity and some scathing satire.
Partway into "A Distasteful Horror Story", I thought I wasn't going to enjoy it. I found the typos and grammatical errors distracting. Intentional though some/most of them were, they annoyed me. So, it's testament to Mr Mains' storytelling that not only did I keep reading but I had a great time with this novel. Indeed, I raced through the last two-thirds in one sitting. It's a wild ride, audacious, satirical, absolutely stomach-churning in places, but at its core it's also a meticulously detaile...
