During the course of Extreme Ownership, the concept of what makes a great leader is examined. And the comparison is drawn between what occurs on the battlefield and what happens in other aspects of life. With all the examples of battles the authors encountered, and their explanations of the lessons and principles learned, plus the application of those lessons that they brought to their leadership training and consulting practice once returning home, it becomes clear that leaders may have some innate qualities that provide them with a capability towards leading - the ability to stay calm under pressure, the charisma to convince people of what direction to take, or a decisive mind. But in the grand scheme, leadership is taught and developed over time and by establishing discipline and ownership for the decisions and actions.

Leaders may not always be the ones making all of the moves in a situation, but they must help empower key leaders under them so that they can work together to establish a way to win. Leaders must realize that they need to be open to ideas from someone from a position beneath them in actual title, because that person is still a member of their team and still has opinions worth listening to. The goal for a leader is to train and mentor their team members so that they can assume more responsibility. The authors concluded that leading people is an extremely challenging task but can also be highly gratifying.
