The novel was a Kickstarter I backed last year & the whole idea of a modern Miskatonic University with all the eccentricities that go along with classic Lovecraft completely appealed to me. The book has thirteen short stories & a section in the back with “who’s who” of Arkham, but more on that in a minute. I wasn’t familiar with any of the authors in this book prior to reading it, there are several that I will look to see what other works they have. Now in the back of the novel is a section call...
Full disclosure: I am an editor on this book. That said, it's a collection of short stories that will make you laugh, raise the hairs on the back of your neck, and bring some much-needed diversity to the Cthulu mythos. Set in the venerable MU, the stories feel anchored by the setting and theme, and some gorgeous new and familiar voices have authored lovely tales.
There are a lot of ways this concept could have gone. To be honest, most of them I wouldn't have enjoyed as much. There could have been a lot of abstract science and over the top philosophical stuff. That's not how this one went. These stories are, basically, normal. An excellent collection of dark, disturbing, unsettling, sometimes darkly funny, and often downright terrifying tales. There are some great, new takes on Lovecraft's universe here, with fresh perspectives and a points of view. It's a great range of voices and stories, and I love how the "Campus Life" theme holds everything together while also allowing the authors a free range for their dark imagination to wander. An excellent read for lovers of horror and strange tales.
An anthology of top authors, all stories taking place at the Miskatonic University, where horror abides. A fictional university created by H.P. Lovecraft in a 1922 novel, the university is located in Arkham, a fictional town in Essex County, Massachusetts. The university and its faculty come alive - for a while, at least - in these 13 tales. Believe me, monsters find their way here to feed off those unwary souls who bring them forth.I was given a copy of the book from the authors for an honest r...
