Elizabeth has been forced to return to England from Kenya. The turmoil in an Africa devastated by climate change making it no longer safe to continue her work as a nurse at a refugee centre. James, lecturer in art history, is an active member of an environmental party. They meet by chance at a time when the increasing sea level is causing catastrophic flooding which leads to a breakdown in social order. Losing everything of their former lives in the political upheaval, even their previous identities, they journey together towards an uncertain future of living off the land.
