I thought Shadow Booth vol. 3 was a little less consistent than previous issues, with a couple of stories that really didn't grab me. That said, the rest of the stories were well-written and thought-provoking, and it's worth the asking price for fantastic contributions from Robert Shearman and Annie Neugebauer. So give it a read - there's much to enjoy her for fans of the dark and weird.
The standout of this anthology is undoubtedly ‘The Cherry Cactus of Corsica’ by Verity Holloway. It's one of those that make you wonder how on earth such an unusual, complex, vivid story could simply spring from someone's imagination. At first, it appears straightforward: a teacher catches one of his students drinking, and is concerned for the boy, who comes from a somewhat unstable family. From there, it blooms (sorry) into a rich, deeply sinister tale of exploitation, art and... immortality. I...
A small handful of strong stories here, propping up the centre of the collection, but otherwise disappointing reiterations of old ideas, unformed attempts at the new and original, and a couple of real clunkers. These are eerie tales indeed. Fans of of Robert Aickman and Shirley Jackson and William Hope Hodgson will approve. “I Have a Secret” by Raquel Castro absolutely knocked my socks off, as did “Demolition,” by Nick Adams. In fact every one of the eleven short stories in Volume 3 is well worth reading.
