This historical tale illuminates the trials and joys of a peasant life at Õisu Manor in the Viljandi region of southern Estonian known as Mulgimaa in the early 19th century. The story is told through the characters of Peebo Mihkel the old woodsman and his superstitious wife Maali, gentle Kärner the gardener, Juri the herdsman, the heartless Overseer Kubjas Ints and follows the life of little Juhan who at the age of three is abandoned to the care of hunting dogs at the Manor kennel. The story provides a view of Manor life from the perspective of the Estonian serfs who provided the labor force on estates owned for centuries by Baltic-German gentry. The story is based on the journals of Juhan Kull the first schoolmaster of Loodi Parish in Viljandimaa who was orphaned at age 3 and adandoned, cared for by hunting hounds in the kennel at Õisu Manor until rescued by the the farm manager's wife.
