Hans Holbein: Masters of German Art

Hans Holbein is one of the most important representatives of Renaissance painting north of the Alps. His paintings of religious subjects were as much in demand as his outstanding skills as a portrait painter, which later became the primary basis of Holbein's reputation. It was Holbein who immortalized the features of Erasmus of Rotterdam, the most brilliant scholar of his day, and Henry VII, king of England, for whom Holbein worked as court painter. His work falls into a period of great political, religious and spiritual change, the age of the Reformation and Humanism. Holbein's lucid compositions demonstrate first and foremost the painter's extraordinary ability to reproduce nature with precision. At the same time, his works reveal an individual interpretation of reality, not infrequently marked by penetrating wit, in which the multi-faceted world of the Renaissance is brought stirringly to life even for viewers today.
