In many countries, our school populations are becoming more and more socially and culturally diverse with successive generations. Demands on schools to deliver effective literacy programmes are becoming more challenging and complex. Schools are expected to cater for students from a broader range of academic attainment and a broader range of ethnic backgrounds. In many places parents and carers expect to have some choice in their children's education. In some countries, indigenous peoples are increasingly asserting their rights to expect schools to promote their own languages and cultures. This book assists schools and teachers to address the complexity of these demands for effective literacy programmes. It presents literacy learning as a set of interactive and social processes that take place within quite specific cultural contexts.
