THE WITCHES OF PENDLE: THE MAGIC AND THE MYTHS

THE WITCHES OF PENDLE: THE MAGIC AND THE MYTHS

Ann Williams
5/5 ( ratings)
Over 400 years ago in East Lancashire, England, near a hill called Pendle, people believed in Witches. This is the story of the Pendle Witches. There are a lot of books and videos about them. In fact the story is famous now throughout the world. Some books are fiction and some related to the facts as far as we know them. But most of the factual books are for adults. That is probably because what happened to these people was not very nice. I wanted to write a book for older children to question our 21st century ideas of witches and if we regard them still as the dangerous, fearsome crones in Shakespeare’s play. Were the Pendle “witches” like this or were they just poor people trying to con their neighbours into giving them food?In the time of the Pendle witches, in the 16th and 17th centuries, witches were greatly feared. They were thought to have caused thousands of injuries, illnesses and even deaths. In this book we will look at magic, myths and the story of the Pendle “witches” and consider whether these people deserved what happened to them all that time ago. Were they witches or just ignorant people who failed to realize that what they admitted to doing was to be their downfall and subsequent demise?
