Waters Wild: The Wolves of Apache Ridge

Waters Wild: The Wolves of Apache Ridge

Rob Gabriele
0/5 ( ratings)
Colt Waters stands at the precipice of “real life.” While his friends seem to be plucking grad-school acceptance letters out of thin air, he’ll be lucky to make it out of college alive. He wants to escape it all — his broken home life and the pressures of society — to spend his days where he feels most connected, in the rugged wilds of New Mexico.

“Wilds.” What a fickle term. Colt knows that wolves were the last semblance of wildness, but they were wiped out years ago by the Smokies, a sadistic band of rangers.

Or so he thought. . .

During a clandestine meeting on campus, the eccentric professor Dr. Harper lets Colt in on a secret: there are wolves yet. A pack of four Mexican grey wolves, the last of their kind, held in captivity just south of the US-Mexico border. Everything shifts into focus as Colt realizes it’s now or never for the wolves of the American southwest.

The next day he rallies his friends — including Emma, the girl he needs more than he knows — and they set off for one last act of wild mercy. The mission: to jailbreak the Luna wolves under the cover of night, and to set them free again in their homeland — the headwaters of New Mexico’s Gila Wilderness.

Tested as much by his inner landscape as the outer, Colt is forced to reckon with the meaning of wildness, his affections for Emma, and the truth about his father who abandoned him long ago. Will he succeed in running the wolves to freedom, or will the Smokies finish what they started? Will Colt ever have reason to hope again?
