Novellas are great - I read this in one delicious and intense sitting, by flashlight actually, during a stormy power-outage. The book is set in the 1950's, but the themes of environmental chaos, racism, and anti-communism felt incredibly topical and important. Great characters and a story that will stay with me for a long time.
Growing up in West Texas in 1957 had its difficulties, but Daugherty's message in this excellent novella, is that it can be the making of the man. 10 year old Troy suffers badly with asthma; ill-health just one of the problems of the inhabitants of Midland, caused by the dust-storms, made worse by years of 'bad farming'. The best novellas leave you wondering how so much could be fitted into them, and this certainly does that. This is the West Texas of Operation Longhorn - where in March 1952 mor...
Daugherty is a multi-talented writer of fiction and biography. This novella is a reflection on a time and place he knows well (Midland, Texas in the late 50s). It is a brief and understated coming-of-age story about a boy and a charismatic man who essentially falls prey to some of the most surreal (and historically true) events of that setting, including bizarre war games, dust storms that create twisters and lighting and mud snow, racism and commie-baiting, and a horrific airplane accident. Many things are taking place in Midland and most not all good. For starters they are dealing with weather that is a constant reminder of the dust bowl with regular windstorms that are blowing sand everywhere and the cause of various medical maladies. During this time is just after McCarthyism era and it has not gone away in this town a...
The story flows well. It's well written, and allows for easy reading ... which is important, since the issues being discussed are far from easy.It explores the mind set of the era of McCarthyism and Brown vs. the Board of Education, and illustrates how bad circumstances can bring out the worst -- and the best -- in people.Definitely worth reading.
