Antoine

Antoine

Marie-Gisèle Landes-Fuss
3/5 ( ratings)
Here is a work recognisably born of the same climate that produced Bonjour Tristesse and The Dangerous Games. Mlle. Landes possesses the same swift, economic style as Mlle. Sagan, and offers us similar glimpses into Left Bank life and the Riviera merry-go-round. But, unlike her famous predecessor, she is a ruthless and highly moral satirist. The real theme of Antoine is the emptiness, destruction, and deep hurt which—inevitably—are produced by purely egocentric self-indulgence. To deny love, Mlle. Landes is saying in effect, is to deny life. Despite its underlying seriousness and bitter self-mockery, this novel combines passionate sensuousness with brightly mordant wit. It is staggeringly frank, yet never salacious : indeed, its moral and social topicality give it importance as a tract for our times.
