Sexual Violence Against Women - A Guide to the Criminal Law

Sexual Violence Against Women - A Guide to the Criminal Law

Elaine Ginsburg
0/5 ( ratings)
The criminal law and the courts in which it is administered are mystifying and alien territory for women. In trials for sexual offences the woman as the 'victim' has no control over the legal process and is often doubly victimised when she finds that it is her character, her behaviour and her way of life that is 'on trial'.

In this guide, two feminist lawyers and campaigners explain in clear language how the man-made criminal process works, how the law currently defines rape and other forms of sexual violence against women and girls and the special evidential rules which are applied in rape trials. The main legal changes since 1976 and the main recommendations of the parliamentary committee in this field are summarised and both piecemeal proposals for change and a radical overhaul of the current legal framework are discussed.

This guide will be of interest to women everywhere wishing to work more effectively against male violence.

The authors are both solicitors practising in London.
