While similar to Animal Ark: Celebrating our Wild World in Poetry and Pictures, this one didn't impress me quite as much. I still think that the photos are amazing. I wish Alexander didn't choose to use Haiku for the writing. It seemed a little awkward and I didn't even realize it was Haiku until the end pages. There were several fold out pages that opened to a larger spread, which is usually pretty cool in a book but in here, they were so randomly placed that it annoyed me a bit because then I'...
My kids absolutely loved this book and getting to see up-close the animals they have only just read about.
k-5I really really like the haiku in this book. It has an energy about it and flow from one poem to another that you don't always get with a collection of haiku. Maybe it is the way it is formatted on the page. I think you could hook kids into this book because of the delicious words that beg to be spoken aloud, paired with the amazing photographs. It is like the big collection that National Geographic did, but this is a much shorter version. Only think I don't like is the fold out pages, as tho...
This book is visually stunning! It reminds me of the Baby Einstein videos I used to watch with my kids when they were little. The text is somewhat difficult for children, though -- plan to read this with the little ones while they enjoy the pictures. Some of the pages are fold-out, which may require a bit more care when turning the page. If I still taught middle school language arts, I would use this book to demonstrate vivid vocabulary! Thanks to the publisher for sending me a copy of this book...
Wonderful portraits of endangered animals with poetry for each animal.
Stunning photographs!Thought provoking Haiku accompanies each photo. Center fold-outs speak of our amazing "Chorus of Creatures" & the fact that their dwindling numbers are due to our actions. "Listen to the earth. That sound you hear is hope with wings."
Creation is beautiful. I walk away from this book being very glad that we have photographic technology because we can see the beauty in every creature through it. I was surprised to see that once you zoom in on a millipede it is not as horrifying as it would be when it's down there on the ground indulating and skittering towards you. The picture allowed me to admire its beauty in its functionality.I also think that we should be protecting our world. We should be careful about what we produce and...
2 stars for the photos. I did not care at all for the prose though.
