I do not usually write political poetry. For me, poetry is most powerful when it does not carry a message, when it avoids teaching and preaching, when it simply captures the moment, depicts it. This has always been my Northern Star when it came to writing, so it was rather strange when these poems spilled out of me. I do not know how to explain or justify this, and I am not certain that I should. I will only say that I believe that Donald Trump is an existential threat to everything that this country was founded on and for me this goes beyond the sphere of politics. This short collection is my attempt to make sense of it all, to strengthen my own foundation, to hold onto my principles when the leader of the country seems set on undermining them. I believe there is value in voicing your truth in opposition, if for no other reason than to fill the vacuum.
