Angelica Cobb was cross, mixed-up, and lonely. She was sure it was going to be the most miserable Christmas she had ever spent. Her mother was in hospital following the arrival of a new baby, and Angelica was left at home in the care of Mrs. Penny, only seeing her father for a fleeting moment each evening before he rushed off to visit her mother.
Then one evening, when waiting in the hospital car park, Angelica meets Minty, a gypsy girl. Minty's mother is also in hospital awaiting a baby, and the two girls begin to talk. It grows dark as they whisper together in the back of the car and when Mr. Cobb jumps into the driving seat and heads for home with two girls instead of one Angelica looks quite worried. But Minty's eyes are sparkling - for her a big adventure is beginning, and for both of them it becomes a very different sort of Christmas.
