The Casket Girls were young women of good birth without family or financial resources, sent by King Louis XV of France in 1728 to New Orleans as prospective brides for the unruly colonists. This is the story of four women: Sidonie and Joelle are Casket Girls, one a bookish young woman who wants to be a teacher and another who dreams of marriage to a wealthy planter. We also encounter Immaculata, a deranged nun and Palmyre, an enslaved woman. The four face convent life and its limitations, sexual violence and the horrors of slavery, and react in very different ways.
