Again, this book fails to gain any forward momentum. Tim is a huge prat, forgetting about finding Ellie after returning from Faerie. He appears to be dumber than a box of rocks. I much prefer a clever Tim who can think his way out of things but makes mistakes. I think my time would be better spent re-reading the 90's series by John Rey Neiber than reading this lackluster series. Tom Fowler only does the layouts in the arc and it shows. Brian Churilla finishes the majority of the book and his art...
My biggest complaints about the first volume in this series were that the story dragged at a glacial pace and that there wasn't nearly enough of the fantastic in a series about magic. I yearned to see Timothy Hunter travel the different realms, like he did so much of in the Neil Gaiman original mini-series and the John Ney Rieber ongoing. Both of those complaints are alleviated in this volume, but only very slightly. Timothy and his mentor Doctor Rose (who readers of the original Gaiman series w...
3.5, rounded down. The second volume of Books Of Magic skews much closer to the series I expected to have from the get-go, echoing past experiences with Tim and reshaping them into something familiar but new.The story moves into the realm of Faerie, with the introduction of Oberon and Titania causing some problems for Tim and Doctor Rose, while out in the human world poor Ellie gets embroiled in Tim's world of magic only to run afoul of the Cold Flame and get herself in serious trouble. Tim's st...
Basic plot: Tim continues his journey to find his friend and rediscover the magic he forgot. The art was interesting, especially in the various places Tim went. I am wishing more and more that I had known in advance that this was a continuation of a previous storyline, because I keep seeing things I recognize as big reveals, but I have no idea of the context because I don't have it. It's frustrating, but I'm following the story ok. Pacing is good and the characters are interesting, even if I don'...
Definitely enjoying this. I need to read more of the new Sandman Universe titles.
3.5
Is it the same thing if you take away a person's desire to choose or to take away their power of choice.
Another excellent outing for this Sandman Universe title! Well communicated action story, with none of the meta overtones of the main title (The Dreaming)... so I'll call it "good in its own way".Highlights:- Tim and Dr. Rose continue their search for Ellie, but end up in the court of Titania in Faerie, where we learn that Tim has been before and made a deal that erased part of his memories.- Dr. Rose makes a deal with Titania and Tim is given back his memories - of all the murder and destructio...
It's weird to think of it when one considers being imprisoned inside a book or talking skulls and fish balloons, but this is really the most restrained and mainstream of the Sandman Universe titles. And, unfortunately for it, that is actually a knock for the series. Tim's trying to find Ellie but ends up in Faerie, then Ellie takes care of herself, and Tim ups the conflict level with the Cold Flame. There's a bit more to it, but that's the main plot, and it doesn't make a whole lot of forward mo...
The plot has certainly picked up the pace but, twelve issues in, I just can't ignore one glaring fact anymore. Our protagonist is... an idiot. I mean, a straight-up doofus. I get that he's a student and he's supposed to be immature but Tim just comes off as dumb. Warned many times not to use magic nilly-willy? Keeps using it. Told not to show off magic to others? Shows off several times. Sees his long-gone mom is somehow back with a very shaky explanation and clearly unmomlike (and just plain fr...
Teenager Tim Hunter has the potential (some factions say ordained) to be a powerful wizard who destroys the world. The different factions are trying to provoke or control him.Tim is not the most likable of characters. I guess this is intentional to portray him being capable of the evil some hope he will embody. That make it difficult for me to embrace this series where we are following this unlikable character. That being said, this 2nd volume was more enjoyable for me than the first. The factio...
A fair magical adventure for kids and teenagers.Kat Howard’s wizardry graphic novel Books of Magic Vol. 2: Second Quarto (2020) is a fine sequel to her first volume. I just found her writing to not progress the story very much as Tim Hunter is still a foolish brat, who recklessly uses magic at will. He’s not a very likable protagonist anymore. I like Ellie’s character and Rose is fairly interesting, but she doesn’t feel like she’s a very powerful wizard compared to Timothy anymore. If the experi...
This collection begins with Tim trying to find a missing classmate, and ending up taking a side-trip to Faerie. Once that particular issue is resolved, the larger issue of the group pursuing him comes to the fore, along with some issues he's having with learning to control magic. Unlike the previous volume, things seem to jump around a bit, especially in the segments set in Faerie (which may be deliberate, I suppose, but didn't really help). There's also quite a lot of Tim just being a bit dim,
Tim's journey of magical discovery continues in parallel with many plots and schemes to neutralize him as a threat to the plans of others. The first book included a visit to The Dreaming and this second volume has us in the lands of Faerie and Titania's court. Events continue to move however as those around Tim are threatened by the forces interested in his destiny. The book nicely captures the perspective of a young man stumbling into the wider world of magic but with the sensibilities of a teen...
Some promising moments, but really, the overly expressive facial expressions on the characters are so distracting and the subsequent dialogue is painfully boring and contrived. Like, why does everyone look like they're midway through a bout of explosive diarrhoea? Is that really the only expression the artist can render? When Ellie (whose imprisonment in a magic book forms the main plot catalyst of this book's first half) just *b r e a k s* out of her magic prison with NO explanation, NO characte...
It's still no Rieber/Gross Books of Magic, but this second volume is definitely an improvement over the first. We get more nuance regarding Tim and his use of magic, along with what looks like a bad prophecy about how he could turn out. That's rather delightfully become a focus of the book, as is the Cold Flame, who never got enough attention in the original. And Timothy takes back his agency from Rose, for better or for worse. I even come to like some of the supporting cast better thanks to a o...
