Hairdresser Tracy Lemon lives with her policeman husband Carl and eight-year-old son Jamie in the same town where they grew up. When Carl applies for a promotion to become detective, Tracy suggests a way to impress the town's cantankerous chief of police—she'll help Carl solve more crimes than the other job candidates. Carl scoffs at the idea, so Tracy issues a challenge—she will solve the next crime in town before he does. At first she's no match for Carl who can use the resources of law enforcement. But when Tracy prevents a suicide, Carl takes notice. Together they confront their community's most pressing social issues—prescription drug abuse, insurance fraud, identity theft, and police brutality.
