Distant Stars by P H LeeThis one is an interesting one: I feel like it gets academic job hunting very wrong, but the core theme about losing what matters resonated with me.Airbody by Sameem SiddiquiThis one was an interesting one also about loss, but also about identity, and it made me sad. I liked it.A System for Investigating Recapitulation and Evolutionary Novelty by Kyle E MillerI didn’t really understand this one… I think it was trying to analogise online relationships, but it really just m...
Rating for ‘AirBody’ by Sadeem Siddiqui.
Very solid issue!- Distant Stars by P H Lee 5*I discovered Lee's short fiction this year and I love their work. This one is about being a woman in STEM, working vs parenting, how one slowly loose connections with their family. The ending was painful but everything worked.- The ThoughtBox by Tlotlo Tsamaase 5*Amazing, amazing story. Everything about it was great: beautiful writing, perfect pacing, the twist at the end was great. I don't want to say anything about the plot because you have to disc...
"AirBody" by Sameem Siddiqui ★★★
A strong issue, ranging from solid to 4 entries on my potential Hugo noms list.
So far only read/listened to:-- AirBody by Sameem Siddiqui - 4* - WINNER OF CLARKESWORLD PEOPLE'S CHOICE AWARD 2020 (awarded in 2021)I admit I was a bit inpatient with all that was unknown to me as the story unfolded but by the end I was in awe. That was really unique! It has a futuristic concept of being able to remote access a human and you can rent them as an avatar. Being across the globe isn't a limiter. The host prepared for his renter by buying items from a shopping list as directed and cl...
AIRBODY by Sameem Siddiqui — renting the body of someone else via shared consiousness, nice idea with lots of possibilities. ★★★☆☆I stand in front of the mirror as I clip the AirBody headset to the backs of my ears. It whirs on automatically—it doesn’t actually whir, but I imagine that’s the microscopic sound it makes as the violet light pulses. It authenticates my identity and says “Hello, Arsalan. Your AirBody guest is in the waiting area. Are you ready?”Winner of the 2020 Clarkesworld Reader
This was a thoughtful set of stories which i found at times emotionally hard. Weaving together social issues and science fiction in a way that the stories will stay with me longer than some stories i enjoy more.Adult themed and there was little in smiles this monthRecommended highlights - Debtless - great concept - mortgaging your future and the implications of your children.Thought box - emotional tale of abuse / kidnapAir Body - air bnb for bodies. I enjoyed the concept and there was deceptive...
A great issue overall, loved specially "AirBody" by Sameem Siddiqui.
Distant Stars - PH Lee ***Neatly pairs the physics of the expanding universe with parenting as a child grows through various milestones after a divorce. Sweet and sad as the narrator reflects on important moments and missed opportunities, and how they are justified at the time but wounding in retrospect. AirBody - Sameem Siddiqui ****Nice take on renting out your body for people to experience remotely, using the generational differences between the body's owner and the client. The examination of...
