It was hard to rate this one as it's a collection of short stories. Most I loved but some not as much, but in the end every one made me think, so it gets the 5. It opens very strong and many stories have a black-mirror kind of feel but more whimsical and less depressing.
This is a book I was eagerly awaiting. Having read a few of Xia Jia's stories I was very happy to become a kickstarter backer for this collection from Neil Clarke of Clarksworld fame who has been a big backer of Chinese science fiction and bringing it to the attention of Western readers.This is a true five star book with not one disappointing story. The language used - short and concise, carefully chosen for efficiency, is a clever and nice change of pace. You end up getting all of the mental imagery and necessary character emotions but almost like magic, as so few words are used. It is the opposite of verbose and it works. That part is fantastic.
