Randomly listened to this on Audio, the way Rooney paints dramatic scenes closely resembles a script even the dialogue, which makes it is easy for me to get through but sadly it never really goes deep. She has some poignant moments but they are few and far between. The two stories sort of mirror one another in that both protagonists are struggling with unrequited love steeped with miscommunication in classic Rooney style. I've also noticed a sort of submissive nature and unbalanced power dynamic
This contains two short stories: Mr Salary and Colour and Light. I’d heard good things about Rooney’s short stories, but I think her ideas work better in long-form. Sometimes I like the banality if her characters, but here I was a bit bored. These are quick reads, so not much is lost if you don’t end up enjoying them. Also, after a conversation about her work with a close friend, I’ve reassessed Rooney’s stories through a different lens which has been enlightening. I think Rooney does write real...
Mr Salary is classic Sally Rooney, whilst Colour and Light perplexed me a little. Very worthwhile spending the time to listen to both.
I think I'll need to give them some more thought. But they definitely feel like there's a lot brewing under the surface. There's something she captures about people and their nature so well.
The thing I love about Rooney is she never fails to showcase every interaction in such a way that communicates the absolute tragedy of, often everyday exchanges. How most of us are socialized in such a way as to never acknowledge or notice the connective tissue of our lives dwelling there. If we approached these moments with more intention and focus, there’s a real beauty and affirmation waiting to be seized. Instead we’re often trains on a collision course and we don’t know how to fix it. We us...
I read Mr Salary last year, and seemed to have completely repressed all memories of cancer being mentioned in it. I’ve also read Colour and Light, but forgot its title too. Anyway, I do really like reading Sally Rooney as an audiobook, it gives me time to really marinate in the story and the feel the turmoil of her characters.
Sally never disappoints me.
I'm not entirely sure what I just read 🤔 But I didn't expect the book to actually contain 2 short stories- despite the title 🤣Maybe this shouldn't have been my first Sally Rooney book, because I'm a little disappointed now, but I did enjoy her writing style a lot. I'll definitely be checking out some of her longer works but this book just wasn't for me. The stories themselves were somewhat realistic, (it's like you were looking into the characters lives), and yet at the same time the plot for bo...
this was me dipping my toes into sally rooney’s work but i think i should’ve just started with either novel of hers. the first story was just…. weird. i didn’t like it. the second one was kind of interesting and it actually felt like a short story with substance, though i was nowhere near blown away. yeah, so, overall, maybe not the best introduction to her books, but i’m still planning on reading the rest.
Read this on my commute, really enjoyed the first story but the second one was just okay for me.
