Marine Aquariums for the Absolute Beginner

Marine Aquariums for the Absolute Beginner

This is the book for the absolute aquarium beginner – no prior knowledge or experience required! I have written this book to depict the simple step-by-step technique needed to build a reliable and cost-effective aquarium without the huge cash outlay required for more upmarket and complex systems. It contains a simple comprehensive guide to keeping successful, attractive and low maintenance marine aquariums. The intention is to help people start an aquarium without having to spend a lot of money with the added benefit of using materials that can be found in most home workshops. I grew up as an only child on my parent’s farm in North-East England with a dedication to all animals but in particular wild animals. This passion for wildlife continued to grow and after immigrating to Australia as a young teen I took on formal studies in Zoology at Sydney University. After obtaining a Bachelor’s degree, I moved to Far North Queensland to commence postgraduate studies towards my Masters degree in Marine Science. Besides my professional research programs spanning the last five decades, I have enjoyed designing, building and maintaining my own personal marine aquariums for a large variety of marine fish and other sea creatures together with professional marine aquarium design consulting. Although my principle studies focus on cartilaginous fish, one of my interests is in the captive breeding of certain species of marine fishes and I became involved in marine aquariums as a secondary interest. Being short on cash, as every young student is, I discovered how to develop my own aquariums on a shoe-string budget. Every marine system, whether large or small, is a miniature copy of what is in the ocean and therefore it is important that each system synthesises the exact same conditions occurring in the sea. As in nature, everything is linked and any step or change made will affect the whole system. This book will show you how to • Collection & seasoning natural sea water • Preparation of artificial water • Specific gravity, evaporation & pH • Water temperature & heating • Aquarium structure, capacity, covers & lighting • Filtration including internal & external filters • Aquarium stand varieties • Décor • Bacteria • Setting up your aquarium • Purchasing & transporting fish • Introducing fish to your aquarium & feeding • Maintenance & dealing with disease This book removes any confusion the reader may have and will provide the necessary grounding to feel confident in creating your own stunning marine aquarium. It explains in simple to understand language how to set-up a proper chemical balance which is all-important to maintain a healthy marine environment and is written in a step-by-step manner so that the reader has a good grasp of all the basics necessary to create and operate a successful marine aquarium prior to moving forward into larger setups.
