I don’t know if I can properly describe how I feel about this story. It is nothing short of amazing. Readers are introduced to Ahmad, a grad student and ride share driver trying to earn a bonus so he can pay his bills. He learns an unexpected lesson about how we can’t escape who we are and where we come from when a domestic terrorist patron slides into the backseat of his car. I don’t want to spoil it. Read the story! I listened to this story on LeVar Burton Reads, but it’s also available in Iss...
Your Rover is Here by LP Kindred is a short story I listened to on LeVar Burton Reads. A cab driver, Ahmad, is driving a fare out to a church and thinks his rider is singing to himself but then figures out it is actually evil chants. Ahmed then reveals he is actually a Jinn and combats the other man who was trying to hurt the congregation with his dark magic. This magical realism tale has a nice urban vibe and has an #ownvoices author, but didn't excite me. (Actual review 3.5/5)
“Your Rover is Here” by LP KindredWell, I and Mr. Burton have vastly differing views of what that story means. I still liked it, but I see the H as being ground down by society and being forced to turn to his “terrorist” family for help, since those in power won’t help him. I see the H’s reluctance to kowtow to his father, who the brother says that the help will come with a price, as proof positive that his family isn’t good. The H needs to live, to survive. He’s taking the only avenue that will...

This review was originally posted on my blog at https://jennifershelby.blog/2020/06/1...This issue of FIYAH contains four short stories and two poems, and I’ll review them in the order of publishing. My overall impression of this is issue positive. I read several literary magazines a week (I love me some short stories!) but I rarely find one wherein I enjoy each and every story as I did this one.Guardian of the Gods by Tobi OgundiranIn the opening story, Ogundiran’s protagonist is an acolyte nam...
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE. Thank you for introducing me to a new author to follow <3
Are you up for an interacial wizard battle in a taxi cab? Then here's a story for you!Imaginative, interesting, insightful.Great stuff!
4.0⭐ "His ain’t the kind of magic you go to school to learn.” **spoilers** ♡ LBR 2020♡ It’s LeVar Burton Reads season 7! Not a moment too soon, eh? I loved this story. Really, LP Kindred (gorgeous name!) is so masterful at doing novel-heavy work in a 3K word span. Some high praise to LPK for this descriptive work. I give the story a high 3, but the prose is a 4 or 5. As Ahmad is summing his magic to fight back, the language is just velvet. Butter on toast. It makes for easy, fluid reading thro
Listened to this on the LeVar Burton Reads podcast. Some good elements, but didn't really come together all that well.
Amazing Book! Listened to it on LeVar Burton reads! Loved it! Diverse characters in sci fi speculative fiction!
Read to me by LeVar Burton.
Read this via Levar Burton Reads podcast. Fantastic urban fantasy dealing with racism , through the story of a black Djinn Uber driver and a bad news passenger he picks up one night. Highly reccomended, excellent short story. I want to see more from this writer and this universe.
This is a great magazine! Light, fresh, interesting, with a strong variety of stories. GUARDIAN OF THE GODS // TOBI OGUNDIRAN - 5765 WORDS: A young acolyte is confronted with new information about the life cycles of the gods. I was hesitant about this one until about halfway through and then I really liked it. A great meditation on faith and a powerful reclamation of cosmic power.UNIFORM // ERRICK NUNNALLY - 5549 WORDS: A mechanized veteran faces crisis in peace. I struggled with this story and
I think I liked the stories in this one slightly better than those in Issue 13, on a general/collective basis. This is not at all useful to you, but I didn't type it for you. LP Kindred's "Your Rover is Here" might, for me, have the most potential for a broader look (apparently this is what I get out of short fiction?). Was definitely interested in the protagonist, who seemed conflicted about doing the right thing, so to speak, with his powers. There is some social commentary here that is rather...
Wonderful short story , listened to it on Levar Burton Reads .
Thought this was kinda average, until the end.
"Guardian of the Gods" by Tobi Ogundiran: A young acolyte learns disturbing truth about the gods. I didn't like it as much as the others in this issue, but it was good."Uniform" by Errick Nunnally: An ex-Marine cyborg finds meaning. This was my favorite story until I read LP Kindred's later on in this issue, but I just really liked the tone that Nunnally took with this."A Terminal Kind of Love" by Veronica Henry: Living well is the best revenge, but also wiping out your ex's company sounds prett...
Heard this on LeVar Burton Reads. Great story!
I need more of this story. It was so good left me asking so many question.
This was the second issue of Fiyah I’ve tried, and the results were the same: I enjoyed the four short stories, each taking me to someplace new — or someplace old but with a new (to me) viewpoint. My favorite story was Uniform, by Errick Nunnally. (I have published a longer review on my website.)(Note: In case Goodreads moves this review, which has happened to me in the past, I wrote it about Issue #14 of Fiyah (literary magazine of Black speculative fiction).)
