To End All Wars by David Tallerman, is the story about the world war one lieutenant Rafael Forrester, who observes a strange signal flare in the sky followed by a large explosion, while working his way through a war torn battlefield. His first thoughts are that this must be a new axis weapon, and doesn’t give it much more thought. Due to his injuries that resulted from the explosion, he is fortunate enough to be transported away quickly to a hospital facility, where he is allowed to recuperate a...
Different and perfect readingA really different historical sci-fi story that was very thoughtful and well told, I particularly liked much of the beginning and the end was interesting
Suppose an otherworldly being crashlanded in the middle of the trenches in WWI, and became a science project. That's the basic premise here, and it's suprisingly well done and thought-out. The main character was there for the "crash", and was affected differently from most others, so he gets to be part of the science project as well, whether he wants to or not.Be aware that this hits some horror beats as well as some SF ones. CW: lack of bodily autonomy, confinement, forced medication
A real page turnerA truly believable main character I was happy to invest my time and emotion in. I really wanted to believe that things would end well for him after all that he endured throughout the story.
I knew nothing about this when I picked up the Audible version and I was very wary about this book. The cover gave the impression that I was in for a sci-fi horror set in the trenches, which it thankfully isn't.Instead we get a mysterious military hospital and the unravelling intrigue of the unusual happenings therein. There's also a suspicious Major who the narrator makes sound like Patrick Stewart (it did not turn into a WWI era X-Men story, which was the only disappointment I had with this bo...
It's July 1916, the eve of the Battle of the Somme. Lieutenant Rafael Forrester is tasked to lead the remnants of his platoon on a night raid to rattle the Germans and keep them guessing as to the timing of the big attack. Unfortunately, the patrol gets hung up in the enemy wire, pinned down by German small arms fire, and suppressed by phosgene gas. Raf himself is wounded in the leg and tumbles into the middle of a a water-filled shell crater. In great pain and delirious, Forrester witnesses a pe...
In the middle of WWI, Forrester is leading a raid against the German army. It doesn't seem to be going well for him, and after calling for a retreat back to their side of the front, Forrester is hit by a bullet in the leg. While struggling to make it back alive, there is an unusual light in the night sky. After that, everyone he stumbles across on both sides of the front appears to be sleeping. Gas masks didn't protect from the effect, and Forrester isn't able to wake any of the sleeping soldier...
Reminded me of reading a Harlan Ellison Story, Thanks
