You're Not Alone: The Journey from Abduction to Empowerment

You're Not Alone: The Journey from Abduction to Empowerment

U.S. Department of Justice
3.6/5 ( ratings)
It is rare that young abductees are returned or found alive but that is just what happened to Elizabeth Smart when at just 14 years old she was taken in the middle of the night from her home in Salt Lake City, Utah. Now she is co-author of a new book entitled You're Not Alone: The Journey from Abduction to Empowerment with four other young victims who wish to turn their experiences into empowerment for young people to avoid the same experience.

The Purpose of the Book

The book was written in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Justice and is clearly intended to be read by people who have been abducted although in her appearance on The Oprah Show on September 10, 2008 Elizabeth Smart said that she was an advocate for prevention and wants everyone to read the book.

The book was begun with an invitation to the authors to participate in sharing their stories for the book. It is divided into five sections beginning with "Your Story" and traveling through the stories of five young people who were all abducted in differing situations.

The book also lists resources you can use if you have been abducted and need to talk to someone or obtain therapy. There is also a list of everyday activities that will help a victim integrate back into their former lives including tips for overcoming guilt and different ways to look at your situation many of which are embedded in the riveting stories the authors tell.

The Stories

"Life, I have found, is not so much about the endpoint, but about the journey and how one responds to experiences along the way," is how Tamara begins her story, the first story in the book. Each of the stories in the book are unique.

Tamara was abducted at gun point when she was 16, Elizabeth was abducted in the middle of the night at knife point when she was 14, Sam was abducted by his own father when he was 10, Maggie who was abducted during a 6am run back to her school and Alicia who was abducted by an internet predator.

The book lists many resources for finding help after abduction and includes a lot of space for readers to record their thoughts about their situation. The book is a logical and orderly way to bring the reader’s attention and focus to the problem of finding normalcy in their daily lives.
