Preface
This book aims to develop a habit of mind—the habit of careful, critical thinking.
It has been written for anyone interested in the way we think, but particularly with Year 10 and Year 11 students in mind. It is for those about to leave school as well as for those preparing for HSC.
To some extent it is a 'teach-yourself' book. Explanations are detailed, and there are in most cases answers suggested for the exercises, in order to release teachers from an 'up-front' role and enable them to spend more time with individual students.
About Aims
I believe there is more to the teaching of 'clear thinking' than the identifying of typical faults. Thinking is a fascinating process, well worth studying for its own sake, and senior secondary students are very ready to reflect on the way we reason and persuade.
My aim, therefore, is to show some of the most common methods of thinking , and in that context to point out dangers peculiar to each method.
