Lieutenants ShareI didn’t think this book was going to be so good. The Lieutenants Share from a Mock raid leaves her in Possession of someone valuable but who also is a liability. I think the MC (girl not the LT) is a little bit of OP but that’s just me. I look forward to reading the next book. Rating: 4/5 Cover: 2/5 Narration: NAFavorite Line: Do as I say, not as I do.”
Another winner by Mixon!Mixon has mastered writing sci-fi.An entertaining tale that mixes several story lines with grace.I gave the book only four stars because it didn't quite increase my heartbeat as much as some of the previous books of his I've read.It probably would have gotten five stars if it was the first one of his I read, but I've become spoiled by many of his other books. It was good enough that i read this in one day!Definitely recommend this for sci-fi fans!Another good job Terry.
Spoils of War by Terry Mixon is the first book in the Imperial Marine Saga. In this one Lieutenant Grace Tolliver of the Imperial Marines is sent on a mission she never expected to be sent on. She and her platoon will have to resign their commissions and seem to turn pirate so they strike at the enemy, the Singularity, and come home rich with booty or die trying. If they are caught the Empire will disavow all knowledge of them. Meanwhile, a 12-year-old girl, called One-Twenty-Four, is just tryi...
Spoils of War was a really terrific read. It combines a very original theme with some great action. The characters are great and the writing is too. Read this one to find out how you turn a 12 yr old girl into an Imperial Marine. A lot of room at the ending for more to come. This is a good long read that keeps you turning the pages.
So, this book worked for me. But it was almost entirely because of 124, the kid from the Singularity. All her earlier parts of the book kept me going in this until the cast was united. Grace's parts weren't very interesting or cool. The actual mechanisms of how the Empire and the Singularity kept their small war going seemed bizarre and odd. You'd think it'd be either more organized with a (hidden?) subdivision of the Fleet/Marines, or they'd actually hire real mercenaries or something. I don't
This book the first of what I am sure will be once again a great series from Terry. It introduces the reader to some of the back story of the series The Empire of the Bones. I would also suggest if you have not read this series give it ago. Although it is not strictly necessary, it would be useful to have read the other series since this series is set just before the fall of the Empire that features prominently in the Empire of the Bones. The characters in this book are interesting, complex and
Very good first book in a new series, not as much action as I would’ve likedUsually I do not like science fiction books with children in them but this was an excellent book for the first book of a series. The plot was interesting and the dynamic between the characters was interesting. I also enjoy the science fiction aspects with implants and science-fiction powered armor. There was a lot of world building in this first book, could’ve used a little bit more action. I am eagerly awaiting the next...
A simple, straightforward story. No plot twists, nothing deep - except for the créche.I felt like I'm reading a book for teenagers. Everything is repeated 3 times, usually with the same words. (narrative, protagonist, someone else) The main message of the book: "that's how it is, we will see how it goes".(view spoiler)[And it was funny, how the adults despised the way the créche worked, seeing it as child abuse. Yet, their 1st thing to do: start training the main protagonist as an Imperial Marin...
An interesting twistImagine two distinct lines of development for humanity, one which employs genetic engineering for some then oddities into a caste system a la Brave New World, and the second which pursues amore technology and cybernetics path of development while acquiring a social structure akin to that of late Victorian England. Now imagine a displaced genetically enhanced teenage girl having to make a place for herself with the help of a marine foster mother in the Victorian society.
This is the first in a new prequel series to the Empire of Bones series. Empire of Bones is set long after the fall of the original Empire, but this new series is set in the Empire at its height. It tells the early years of Andrea Tolliver, and how she was rescued from The Singularity.Marine Lieutenant Grace Tolliver led a strike mission into the Empire's enemy, and encountered One Twenty-Four, one of 200 12yo clones being trained as future rulers of The Singularity. Less than half of the clones...
I am part of Terry’s advanced reader group so I have had the pleasure of already reading this story. This is a very good read it will keep your interest from the first page to the last. Now Terry has created a new story that I can not wait till the next book in the series comes out. If you are looking for a new author to read you can not go wrong with this story or any of Terry’s other books.
Excellent first book in a seriesThe author has managed to write the book in such a way, that's he backstory/groundwork has been laid perfectly, but at the same time make the story itself interesting and fast pacedCharacters have been well thought and the conflict between the 2 powers explained wellThe possibilities of where this series could go are endless, although I suspect the most obvious one is where the author plans to go. 2nd book in the series already bought
