A good anthology of stories from around the world that is not from North America or Britain. Stories are selected based on the editor's taste, so it would not be possible for a reader to like all the stories. But the anthology still shows the wide breath of writing that is World SF. The title is a bold claim, but this was a fantastic collection of stories that embraced the ‘world’ aspect in particular, and it was a delight to discover not only new authors, but also different approaches to sscience fiction and storytelling in general. A big fat SF anthology compiling up to 26 writers from all over the world. As many anthologies, it has its inevitable ups and downs (the second half can get a bit dull to be honest, until things get better again toward the end, to finish with a bang). One of the finest anthologies I've ever had the pleasure of reading, speculative fiction or otherwise. The worst stories in it were still unusually good and the best were absolutely magnificent. Of special pleasure was the Silvia Moreno-Garcia novella. I couldn't agree with editor Lavie Tidhar more, I wish she wrote more sci-fi.

This really is a collection of some of the best of world SF short stories! Many of these are reprints, some of them have won awards, and so many of them are just great reads. There's a good mixture in here of various countries and approaches to SF, and lots of the stories are translated. A few of the stories verge a little towards the weird side, and there were a few that didn't work for me, but so many of these were just excellent reads. "Best" is a word that is often used too freely, but in the case of "The Best of World SF" I can't imagine a better word. Travelling the world through fiction is always fun and entertaining, but getting the chance to explore the minds of authors from all over the world in a sci-fi setting is totally magical!
