THE CHINA LETTER was written by Dr. George Hill Hodel, Chief Regional Medical Officer for UNRRA , in 1946. It is a first-person account of his nine-month assignment of post-WWII service to Hankow, China. This is a unique and scholarly time-capsule that gives us a "boots on the ground" look at conditions in China immediately after the end of WWII. As UNRRA's Chief Medical Officer he was accorded the honorary rank of Lieutenant General, provided an Army jeep with a three-star flag, a driver, a staff assistant, and a cook.
